What is Speech-Language Pathology?
A pediatric speech-language pathology (SLP) program helps your child develop the skills necessary for successful communication and feeding. These skills can affect all aspects of daily life, from obtaining optimum nutrition for healthy growth and development to communicating basic needs, developing social skills and friendships to progress in school.
Who is a Candidate for SLP?
After discussing your child’s development with your pediatrician, a referral to SLP services may be recommended if you have concerns in one of the following areas:
- Feeding, Chewing and Swallowing disorders (for more information on feeding therapy, click here)
- Articulation (pronunciation of speech sounds)
- Autism Spectrum Disorders
- Childhood Apraxia of Speech
- Expressive Language (using words and sentences to express thoughts)
- Language Comprehension (understanding concepts, following directions)
- Oromyofunctional Disorders (tongue thrust)
- Excessive Drooling
- Reading and Phonics
- Resonance and Cleft Palate
- Social Skills
- Stuttering Disorders
- Voice Disorders and Vocal Cord Dysfunction (chronic hoarseness)
How Do I Get Started?
Identifying your child’s difficulties and strengths through a speech and language evaluation is the first step to assisting a child with feeding or communication problems. Dr. Cindy Stimart, SLPD/CCC-SLP, TSSLD, CLC, and her Independent Contractors evaluate and treat children from birth to 21 years of age who have difficulties with feeding, swallowing and communication. Evaluations and treatments sessions are available through a secure, Telehealth platform.
All providers are skilled in administering formal tests as well as providing clinical observation of play, interaction, and conversation to determine if your child needs intervention. Cindy provides ongoing individualized management and believes in a family-centered approach to therapy that strives to involve all members of the household in the therapy process.
